The PRL Motorsports Billet Intercooler Upgrade is engineered to directly address one of the most well known limitations of the factory turbocharged Civic Type-R platform: heat soak. While the OEM intercooler is adequate for normal driving, it quickly becomes a restriction when exposed to spirited driving, aggressive throttle inputs, or increased power levels. Excessive heat buildup leads to higher intake air temperatures, elevated cylinder temps, and an increased risk of detonation, all of which result in inconsistent performance and noticeable power loss.

PRL Motorsports developed this intercooler as a true bolt-on solution designed to dramatically reduce charge air temperatures while maintaining factory-level fitment and reliability. The result is a more consistent, safer, and more efficient power delivery across the entire RPM range.

Advanced Intercooler Core Design

At the heart of this upgrade is PRL’s high-density bar-and-plate intercooler core, measuring 28.35 x 4.3 x 7.25 inches and rated to support over 600 horsepower. This core design increases overall surface area by 31 percent compared to the factory intercooler, allowing significantly improved heat dissipation and airflow capacity. Increased internal flow paths help reduce pressure drop while maintaining excellent cooling efficiency, even under sustained load.

To further enhance cooling performance, PRL extended the intercooler fins to fully occupy the width of the front bumper opening. This maximizes exposure to ambient airflow and improves heat transfer not only through the intercooler itself, but also downstream into the radiator.

Billet Aluminum End Tanks and OEM-Level Fitment

The intercooler features precision CNC-machined billet aluminum end tanks designed to optimize airflow distribution while eliminating turbulence. These end tanks are engineered to flow as smoothly as they look, ensuring efficient charge air movement into the intake system.

PRL retained all factory mounting points, factory air ducts, and OEM shrouding, allowing the intercooler to install cleanly without permanent modification. The design reuses all factory intercooler bolts and hardware, preserving Honda’s original mounting strategy while significantly improving performance.
